Photo's, special memories, and funny moments of the Lake Charles High School Kilties, a fast stepping drill team.
Footprints of the Kilties
The Kilties were a highly unusual and quite famous drill squad at Lake Charles High School from 1939 to 1983. The brain child of several Latin teachers and Principal G.W. Ford, the Kilties, as their name implies, wore a Highland Scottish uniform of Kilts made from Tartan wool plaid.
The Kilties performace of fast stepping (220 steps per minute) drill, attracted national attention and won them many awards. Perhaps the most unique thing about the Kilties, was how two high school teachers, Iris Murphy and Lucille Leaton, worked with the group for 23 years, and molded the characters of these young high school girls into a unique team.
