Franklin Hildegard, for a quarter of the century, the chronicler of contemporary life in Jennings and Jefferson Davis Parish, was equally interested in its past. So it wasn't surprising that he began visiting burial grounds after becoming publisher of the local newspaper. Armed with basic information, he was able to update himself on current community life. He would seek out those family names that had lasted generations in the area.
Economic hardships in the 1930s, and the war in the 1940s, he becomes a decorated soldier. After wartime ended, he served again as a member of the parish draft board.
