The name "Hébert" is a large part of Acadian History. The main concentration in this work is on the known ancestors of the Héberts of Acadian descent who came to Louisiana during the period of 1765 and 1785. Divided into five main sections: historical, the Hébert name, genealogical listings of the first six generations, select descendants of Francois Hébert and Marianne Mouton of Vermilion Parish, and the last section is additional information that is helpful in understanding the history of the Héberts and Acadians.

At the start of his research, Dr. Joseph Hébert was living as far away from Cajun culture as you could imagine, Manhatten, New York. After failing to answer his grandkids questions about his heritage, he did a considerable amount of historical reading, writings of others, and eventually, wrote a short draft on the history of the Acadians as seen through the eyes of his Hébert family. In his own mind, Cajun stories should be written by Cajuns. So to better correct the image that many outsiders have of that group of people and to show the true picture of the ancestors and culture.
