W.J. Eccles was a graduate of McGill University and received his graduate training there and at the Sorbonne. He taught at the University of Manitoba and Alberta, and was professor emeritus at the University of Toronto. He had been visiting professor at the University of Chile, Santiago, McGill, McMaster, and the University of Western Ontario. He was one of French Colonial History's greatest historians.
