Around 1765 three Comeaux brothers, Michel, Charles, and Victor reached Opelousas Post in the Northern Attakapas, probably via New Orleans. Descendants remained within the Grand Coteau area into antebellum times. After 250 years most of their progeny are living in the Louisiana prairies west of Bayou Teche giving rise to today's concentration of Comeaux families in Lafayette & Iberia parishes.

Pierre Richard was born 9/27/1712 at Grand Pre, Acadia and is first listed in Louisiana on the 1767 ship passenger list of the Acadians who arrived from Maryland. The 1767 Spanish land grant map of St. Gabriel, Louisiana has this family listed. He settled as a farmer & stockman in the Bellevue prairies south of Opelousas. Pierre and his six sons were the main forebears of the Richards of southwestern Louisiana.
