Alexis Butaud, the first generation of the Butaud family in southwest Louisiana, came to New Orleans from France about 1827, married, and settled in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. The descendants of Alexis Butaud, and the related Southwest Louisiana families of William Thomas Holland, Pierre Clairville Bonin, Claude Henri de la Houssaye, and Joseph Robert have each contributed in some way to the development of Southwest Louisiana.
