Once Upon a River, A History of Pineville, Louisiana
This book of 1968 is a full-fledged history and enriching glance into the great heritage of Pineville, Louisiana. The author's research has uncovered much that is new and her scholarly presentation is smoothly written - this is far and away the best thing we have on Central Louisiana. The author also gives generous space to the relationship of southeastern Grant Parish and Rapides.
"...The Taensa and Avoyel tribes lived separately in areas between the Mississippi and Red rivers. In 1682 the de La Salle expedition wrote "it must be noted that all the villages which are situated on the left of the river make war on those on the right."
"...At least since 1878 the majority of Pineville citizens have favored legislation to improve the moral climate of the municipality. The first ordinance passed by the coucilmen was to prohibit gambling. In 1884 the voters of the entire parish of Rapides voted overwhelmingly for Prohibition."
"...The enrollment at Louisiana College grew gradually in its first years. However, in 1911 the young college suffered a serious setback. On a freezing night in January a fire destroyed everything on the campus except one small building."
