Louisiana Freshwater Mussels
Freshwater mussels occur in streams and lakes around Louisiana. The fauna is diverse and has received a great deal of study over the last 100 years. Mussels can occur in massive beds where each organism filters gallons a day. But these “reef-like” communities are disappearing rapidly. New research involves genetic analysis and ecological topics which has led to a better understanding of their conservation status.
Professor Malcom F. Vidrine’s book compiles lists of species with detailed description, photo, and distribution. Included are historical records, river survey reports, and studies to develop more essential data regarding preservation efforts.
The Vidrine Mussel Collection at Louisiana State University Shreveport, has been curated by many colleagues over the years and is the primary resource of Louisiana freshwater mussels.
