At dawn on June 27, 1957, the hurricane slammed into the sleeping Gulf Coast 12 hours ahead of its predicted landfall. Residents were poised to evacuate, but the early arrival of this category-4 storm resulted in a massive death toll of more than 525 people—almost 200 of them children.
 

This nonfiction narrative reads like a suspense novel, revealing previously untold details of Hurricane Audrey at a gale-force pace.  Award-winning author, historian and biographer Cathy Cagle Post is a native of Louisiana. For her work in preserving Louisiana history, this book was honored in Washington DC, on the floor of the U.S. Senate, and entered into the Congressional Record on the 50th anniversary of Hurricane Audrey.  She is also the 2022 national winner of the Pencraft Award for Literary Excellence, for her recent book, Red Cagle: West Point’s Three-Time All-American (sports genre).
