A Historical Record
Founding Families of Vernon Parish, Louisiana
Genealogist Stanley Fletcher’s extensive research identifies about 624 families that braved difficult conditions to homestead land and establish a new home in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. Additional information to land records is included such as Birth Year & Location, Family, Occupation, Military Service, Community Location, Death & Burial and a remarkable 4,500 name index.
“Some of these homesteading families were large and some were small. Attempts were made to rid the listing of the 65 carpetbaggers who acquired land but never lived in Vernon Parish.”
“...LeBleu was one of the first surnames found in the 1806-1819 Neutral Strip records. Arsene LeBleu was born in 1788 in Spanish Louisiana. He was a planter,
slave owner, and a Captain of Jean Lafitte’s pirates. Legend says he was always in trouble with the law and a suspect in the disappearance of Charles Sallier of Lake Charles, who married his sister. Perhaps to escape the law, he moved to California and died during the 1849 Gold Rush.”By Stanley Fletcher
