  • A Southern Record was written immediately after the fighting ceased, and it was one of the first Civil War unit histories published. W.H. Tunnard used as his sources letters, diaries, “after action reports” published in newspapers, and personal recollection of events. In the literary style of the educated man of his day, Tunnard writes of marches, hardships, camp life, and battles of the 3rd Louisiana. War to this veteran is not horrible. He strives throughout to glorify the accomplishments of his regiment and Southern arms, and to eulogize Southern womanhood.

Published in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1866, W. H. Tunnard used a complete record of the campaign in Arkansas and Missouri; the Battles of Oak Hills, Elk Horn, Iuka, Corinth; the Second Siege of Vicksburg, anecdotes, camps, scenery, and descriptions of the country through which the regiment marched, along with a complete roster including rank advancement info, extensive historical footnotes, & a thorough 1,200 entry index.
